Here, I have used plywood in three different shades to create material diversity. This was intended to represent the three cities that raised me: Manila (Philippines), Perth and Sydney. The timber has been left untreated and kept as natural as possible to reflect my developing interest in minimalism as not only an 'aesthetic' but also a way of thinking and living.

The untreated timber works together with the structural form of the model, which appears to bend and 'fold' in different directions. Both reflect the natural tendency for humanity to adapt to changes, as well as the culminated growth from unique cultural experiences. Glass panes have also been added primarily as a source of light for the interior space, but can conceptually emphasise the connection between our external cultural environment to our individual identities.

Bamboo / Nipa shingles / Glass

The materiality used here aims to embrace more fully my Filipino Australian identity. Having been born in the Philippines and raised in Australia, the liminality that exists in my identity has made me struggle to accept my ethnicity in my early childhood and teenage years. As a young adult many years after first immigrating to Australia, I feel like I have come to appreciate my unique identity more fully, and the material selection for this model aims to reflect that.

I have used bamboo and Nipa shingles, both of which are used to create the traditional Filipino home, 'bahay kubo', which can be described as a bamboo stilt hut. However, I have also included large glass panes both in the facades and the ceiling to add a sort of material hybridity with a contemporary twist.

For this model, I focused on reflecting my personality in my material selection. As someone who is more introverted than others, I used denser materials such as stone, steel and timber to create a safe barrier from the external environment. I also consider myself as someone who is more moved by their emotions than logical thinking, which is why I incorporated large glass windows in the facade to add a sense of vulnerability and transparency to the architecture. Overall, the material selection aims to create a haven; a safe space for the individual user (myself) and others who enter it - this is reflective of my caring nature towards my family, friends and loved ones.
